John J. Stark

1905-1998
John Stark began studying art at the Art Student's League of New York in 1926. In 1934, he traveled throughout Mexico with friend and fellow artist, David Sigueiros. John became friends with many other renowned artists such as Arshile Gorky, Marion Greenwood, Jackson Pollack, Freda Kohla, Hans Hoffman and Jose Clemente Orozco. While most of his life he spent running the family-owned restaurant, Stark's Chophouse, in New York City, John was able to focus on his love of painting upon retirement. Between 1968 and 1997 John created close to three hundred works.
The pieces on display have been selected to represent the various styles that John focused on in his later years.
